What we offer

Introduction

Welcome to the Sunshine Coast Medical Weight Loss Centre where you are more than just a "weight". At our centre your health and weight is more completely assessed and your progress tracked in more ways that just how many kilograms you may lose. Our professional team is here to assist you to make sensible lifelong changes to help keep the weight off for good. There are no group sessions and each client is assessed and given an individual tailored program to suit there needs. We will discuss your concerns and offer motivation in your weekly educational consultations. As there are no lock in contracts and you pay as you go, your individual program has the flexibility to be changed if and when needed.

The centre does not promote only one method or program weight loss. A carpenter does not work with just one hammer, but rather through the appropriate use of a number of tools. Our centre takes this approach to weight management. We do no presume that one weight loss method will be suitable for everyone. We offer a range of options including dietary meal replacements, dietary guidance, medication support, psychological support and even surgical support. Through comprehensive assessment and discussion with our clients we aim to provide a more personalised approach to weight loss.

Being a MEDICAL weight loss centre gives us the advantage of better monitoring high risk clients who may suffer from heart disease, high cholesterol, diebetes etc

Your First Visit

In our first meeting we will set the scene for your weight loss program. We review your health in detail and examine how your weight may be impacting your health. We do this through a detailed examination of your medical history and screen for common health problems.

On your arrival you will need to complete a comprehensive health survey. (Arriving 10 minutes early for your appointment will allow time to fill in the four page survey and have your impedence test performed). The survey asks about your medical history and about any medications you may be taking. If you take a number of medications, or have a complex medical history, it may be a good idea to prepare in advance and bring in a written list. It is best to allow up to 50 minutes for your first visit.

After you have completed this your weight, height and age will be recorded. You will be asked to remove any jewellery for the impedence test.

We are very proud to offer cutting edge technology to help assess your weight. We record the conventional measurements of height and weight. These values allow us to calculate your body mass index or BMI. This value helps to tells us whether you may be overweight or in the normal weight range for your height.

In addition to this simple calculation we are also able to offer a much more sophisticated analysis of your weight. Body fat composition can be calculated using simple painless electrical conduction. This elegant test allows us to determine what percentage of your total body weight is fat. This test works much more effectively than simple BMI calculation, especially for people who are very tall, very short or who have a more muscular frame.

Bioelectrical Impedance
Body impedance is measured when a small, safe electrical signal is passed through the body, carried by water and fluids. Impedance is greatest in fat tissue, which contains only 10-20% water, while fat-free mass, which contains 70-75% water, allows the signal to pass much more easily. By using the impedance measurements along with a person's height and weight, and body type (gender, age, fitness level), it is possible to calculate the percentage of body fat, fat-free mass, hydration level, and other body composition values.

We combine both body fat composition and BMI to help set realistic goals for your weight loss.

It is likely that you will be sent for blood tests that can be collected a few days after the consultation. These tests complete the examination process and allow planning for your weight loss program. You will have these results discussed in detail at your next consultation.

The blood test should be collected in a fasting state. This requires you to fast (ie no food or drink except water) for at least 12 hours. Fasting is very important as it allows the most useful measurement of cholesterol and blood sugar.

Once your assessment is complete, the doctor can discuss options that may be suitable for your situation.

Platform approach

The 'platform approach' describes the framework for a structured weight loss diet. The eating approach is concept based and can be tailored to individual client's needs.

This approach has been nicknamed 'platform' as it helps to provide the body with a foundation, or platform, on which weight loss can be established and maintained. This foundation allows for, and encourages, increased physical activity through stimulating energy levels and metabolism.

Through an understanding of the basic concepts of the 'platform' approach we encourage clients to make appropriate and informed meal selections. We do not encourage an obsessive counting of points or calories, rather an understanding of what foods are needed at different times and why.

The Platform approach has already helped a large number of people to lose significant amounts of weight. It is suitable, and quite beneficial, for clients with diabetes or sugar imbalance.

Dr Macleods Weight Management Products

This is a popular option that is available to our clients. This is strictly a medically supervised meal replacement program. It consists of shakes, soups and meal replacement bars.
The manufacturers of Dr MacLeods feel strongly that medical practitioners are best placed to deal with issues of long term weight management and therefore restrict availability of this program to doctors.
With this program you replace two meals a day with the meal replacements and then have one meal of chicken, meat or fish. (individually tailored by one of our team) Dr MacLeods contains all the vitamins, protein, fat and carbohydrates your body needs and is a complete meal. One of the benefits of using a meal replacement program can be to kick start your weight loss and busy people may find them more portable and convenient to use. You will also find that the ketosis of fat breakdown will reduce your appetite and you will have energy to burn.

The Sunshine Coast Medical Weight Loss Centre stocks all the current Dr MacLeods flavours and these include:

Shakes – Chocolate, Strawberry, Vanilla, Honeycomb and Café Latte
Soups – Country Chicken and Beef Curry
Bars – Sultana and Peanut and Apricot and Pecan

A Dr MacLeods information book is also available to order through our clinic.
